Pune, Aug 7 (PTI) Scavenging birds like black kites which are attracted by garbage and open waste disposal in the surrounding area are becoming a safety concern for authorities at the Lohegaon Air Force Station here, an official said on Friday.
The airbase, which handles both military and civil aircraft, is taking steps to reduce the threat of bird strikes, he added.
“Bird-related hazards are a significant aviation safety concern at the Pune airbase,” said an IAF official.
“The Air Force is working with civic authorities to address environmental factors contributing to bird activity while strengthening preventive measures within the airfield,” he added.
The airport handles around 240 civil flights daily and 72,000 operations annually.
The IAF is installing eight bird deterrent modules at the airfield and conducting daily patrols at 16 high-risk locations.
“The measures aim to combine technology with surveillance to detect and discourage bird movement in critical areas,” officials said.
The Air Force is also engaging with local authorities to address sources of bird attraction outside the airfield, a key part of the long-term solution, he said. PTI SPK KRK
