Bhadarwah/Jammu, Jul 22 (PTI) The ‘Gaddi’ tribals living in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on Friday celebrated the victory of Droupadi Murmu, who scripted history by becoming India’s first tribal president.

Murmu, 64, won by an overwhelming margin against Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha after receiving over 64 per cent valid votes in a day-long counting of ballots of MPs and MLAs, comprising the electoral college, to succeed Ram Nath Kovind to become the country’s 15th president on Thursday.

Members of All Jammu Kashmir Gaddi Sabha (AJKGS), a tribal welfare body, led by its chief Parveen Jaryal distributed sweets and raised slogans in favour of the newly-elected president of the country.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have taken a big step by making a tribal woman the president of the country, which will surely boost the morale of tribal communities residing across the length and breadth of the country,” Jaryal said.

Celebrations were also reported from tribal areas across Chenab region in the Union territory. PTI CORR AB SRY
