Raipur, Aug 14 (PTI) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Friday said that future generations must learn about the “massive human tragedy” of Partition to strengthen national unity and prevent a recurrence of such circumstances.
At an event on ‘Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas’, Sai said the pain of 1947 serves as a constant reminder to preserve social harmony and national integrity under all circumstances.
Partition was not merely a division of land and boundaries; the tragedy forced millions to leave their birthplace, homes and loved ones. Bengalis, Sikhs and Sindhis suffered the unbearable pain of displacement, he said.
“Most of those who witnessed the horrors of that period are no longer with us, but the pain continues to live in the memories of their families and future generations,” Sai said.
He said people displaced during Partition faced extremely difficult circumstances and had to leave behind everything they possessed and start their lives almost from scratch in new places.
“Through their hard work, perseverance and resilience, they rebuilt their lives and made significant contributions to the development of the country and society. Their struggle and courage are an inspiration for future generations,” the chief minister said.
Sai said Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to observe August 14 as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ to honour those who lost their lives in the tragedy and recognise the struggles of families that suffered displacement, besides familiarising the younger generation with this chapter of history.
He noted that the day was not just an occasion to remember the pain of the past but an opportunity to learn from the tragedy and strengthen the nation’s resolve towards unity and integrity.
“It is essential for our future generations to know how great a human tragedy millions of Indians went through at the time of Partition along with Independence. Remembering history is necessary so that such circumstances are not repeated in future, and the spirit of unity, harmony and brotherhood in society becomes stronger,” Sai said.
He said India is moving ahead with the resolve to become a developed nation by 2047, and this can be realised only on the foundation of a united and empowered society.
Padma Shri awardee Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi, a key speaker at the event, said that a united society would lead to a united nation and maintaining India’s unity and integrity is every citizen’s responsibility.
Representatives of communities affected by Partition and their family members shared their experiences and memories at the event.
Sai also participated in a silent march from the Directorate of Archaeology office to Ambedkar Chowk to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during Partition and expressed solidarity with millions of families that suffered displacement and trauma. PTI TKP ARU
