New Delhi, Sep 22 (PTI) Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary M A Baby on Tuesday congratulated Leftist leader Elif Eralp for her victory in the 2026 Berlin state election, stressing that the “socialist alternative” is winning “from New York to Berlin”.
Baby took to microblogging site X to congratulate Eralp for leading her party Die Linke to a historic victory.
“From New York to Berlin, the socialist alternative is winning!” Baby said.
“Heartiest congratulations to Comrade Elif Eralp on leading Die Linke Berlin to a historic victory. Hope you will be able to fulfil your promises centred on housing rights, social justice, and dignity,” he said.
The Left leader said the mandate proves that “programmatic (issue-driven) politics” can push back the Right wing.
“Berlin’s clear mandate against conservative rule proves that a programmatic alternative can push back the Right wing. Your victory is an inspiration to all those who pursue class politics. More power to the working people!” he said.
The far-Left Die Linke party won the Berlin election on Sunday, making its lead candidate Elif Eralp the top contender to become the next mayor of Germany’s capital city.
Eralp and her party have promised steps to solve Berlin’s housing crisis and bring down rents, including a pledge to expropriate flats held by large corporate landlords.
