Kolkata, Aug 29 (PTI) Coastal and western districts of West Bengal are bracing for heavy rainfall under the influence of a fresh low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal, the IMD said on Saturday.
The weather system is likely to trigger heavy precipitation in Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts till August 31, it said in a bulletin.
The low-pressure area is likely to move west-northwestward across north Odisha-Gangetic West Bengal, the India Meteorological Department said.
Heavy rainfall is also likely in Jhargram, Bankura and Purulia districts, it said.
The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off West Bengal and Odisha coasts and north Bay of Bengal till Monday, as sea conditions will be rough owing to squally winds reaching 45 kmph, the bulletin stated.
Haldia in Purba Medinipur district received 62 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Saturday, the highest in the state during the period.
The coastal town of Digha got 37-mm rainfall, while the Himalayan tourist town of Darjeeling received 51-mm precipitation, it added. PTI AMR RBT
