Kolkata, Aug 23 (PTI) West Bengal Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh on Sunday asserted that the BJP government has given a free hand to the police to take action against gangsters in the state.

Speaking at a function here, the Kharagpur MLA said “threat culture” has now become a thing of the past in West Bengal.

“I have asked the police to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards criminal elements. No mafia will be allowed to step foot on the soil of Kharagpur,” he asserted.

“Forget about what happened during the TMC rule in West Bengal. The BJP government has given a free hand to the police to take action against mafia and gangsters,” the senior BJP leader said.

If the crime is grave and the situation warrants, “encounter by the police will be the last resort”, Ghosh added. PTI SUS RBT

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
