New Delhi: A four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area on Wednesday evening after cracks developed in the structure, police said.

No casualty was reported as residents were promptly evacuated before the structure collapsed, they said.

Information regarding the collapse of the building in Prakash Vihar near the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, was received at Karawal Nagar police station at around 6.30 pm.

During a preliminary enquiry, it was found that civil work related to the construction or repair of a nearby drain was being carried out by a civic department of Uttar Pradesh in the adjoining area.

At around 3 pm, cracks appeared in the four-storey building, prompting authorities to immediately evacuate the structure as a precautionary measure, police said.

The building subsequently collapsed, but no one was injured as all occupants had been moved to safety before the incident.

Teams from the Fire Department, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and other civic agencies rushed to the spot and undertook preventive and safety measures in the area.

Authorities are examining the circumstances that led to the collapse and further enquiry into the matter is underway.
