Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), Oct 22 (PTI) Four Bhavani devotees were killed, and three others were injured when an SUV hit them while they were having tea by the roadside on NH 16 in this district on Thursday, a police official said.

The devotees, from Denkada village in Vizianagaram district, were travelling to Vijayawada to visit the Kanaka Durga temple when they stopped their bus at Ravikimpadu Centre near Kattipudi junction around 5.40 am, the official told PTI.

They were wearing Bhavani malas – sacred garlands worn by devotees observing a religious vow dedicated to Goddess Bhavani, often as part of a pilgrimage to the Kanaka Durga temple – and alighted from their bus to have tea when the SUV heading towards Rajahmundry from Visakhapatnam direction hit them, killing three on the spot while another person died on the way to hospital, the official added.

The injured included a parcel van driver and a travel bus cleaner, who were shifted to a hospital for treatment, he said. The SUV driver, who was also wearing a Bhavani mala, was proceeding towards Vijayawada, police said. PTI MS ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
