Nainital, Apr 24 (PTI) A 53-year-old contractual staff of the forest department died after slipping into a deep gorge in Birla Chungi area here on Friday, officials said.

According to officials, Anand Lal, a resident of Birla Chungi, was clearing dry leaves in a forested area as part of efforts to prevent forest fires during summer, when he lost his footing on a rock and fell into the gorge.

Family members and forest department personnel rushed to the spot after receiving the information. Lal was shifted to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, officials said.

Naina Range Officer Lalit Mohan Karki said Lal was a temporary employee hired specifically for the fire season.
