Bulandshahr, Oct 16 (PTI) Five people, including four members of a family, were killed and three others injured after a car crashed into a tree in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district on Friday, police said.

The accident occurred around 2 pm when an Eeco car went out of control and rammed into a tree in the Narora police station area, according to police.

The accident took place on the national highway near a Shiva temple between Ratanpur and Kheriya villages. The car, travelling at high speed from the Dibai side, veered off the road at a slight bend and crashed into a large jamun tree standing about four metres away, according to local accounts.

All eight occupants, including the driver, were taken to a community health centre in Dibai, where five were declared dead, police said.

The deceased were identified as Lokendra (28), his one-year-old daughter Pragati, Ramdeen (50), Babita (35) and car driver Shivshankar alias Shiv Shekhar Mishra (55). Ramdeen was Lokendra’s father and Pragati’s grandfather. Babita was the wife of Praveen Kumar.

The three injured persons were identified as Lalit (20), wife of Lokendra, Prateek (4) and Anika (11), children of Praveen Kumar. They were referred to a medical college in Aligarh and are undergoing treatment.

Local residents, including farmers working in nearby fields and people at the temple, rushed to the spot after hearing cries for help and assisted in rescuing the trapped occupants. Police personnel and emergency services subsequently shifted all eight to the hospital.

Police and local administration officials from Dibai reached the spot following the incident.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ravikant Chaubey and Circle Officer Madhup Singh visited the community health centre and inspected the accident site, where they spoke to local residents about the circumstances leading to the crash.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem after completion of the inquest proceedings, and further legal action is underway, police said. PTI KIS NB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
