Jamshedpur, Oct 31 (PTI) Five people were arrested for allegedly being involved in cybercrime in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district, police said.

The arrest was made during a raid conducted by a police team on Friday, Jamshedpur Rural SP Subham Kumar Khandelwal said.

Addressing a press conference here, the SP said a police team from Ramgarh district visited the city to investigate a case in which the accused were booked eight months ago.

The Ramgarh Thana personnel found the accused active in the Birsanagar Police Station limits in Jamshedpur, he said.

Accordingly, East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police Ehtesham Waquarib directed the Jamshedpur Cyber Thana, Birsanagar Police Station and Ramgarh Cyber Thana to conduct a joint raid to apprehend the culprits, Khandelwal said.

Based on evidence gathered during the investigation, the team cordoned off a flat in Dungri Tola area in Om Nagar under the Birsanagar Police Station limits before the raid was conducted.

The police team raided the premises and arrested five people for their alleged involvement in cybercrime, the SP said.

“Five laptops, 25 mobile phones, 67 SIM cards, nine bank passbooks, 102 debit cards of different banks and four account passbooks, and a Wi-Fi router, among others, were seized,” he said.

About the modus operandi, the SP said the accused used to encourage people to play games on an online platform to win money with minimum investment.

One of the accused was wanted by the Ramgarh police in connection with a Rs 43 lakh online fraud, the police said.

The arrested people were working as facilitators of the crime, while those who were operating the online gaming were from various states, he added. PTI BS BDC
