Kollam (Keralam), Sep 12 (PTI) CPI(M) co-traveller and filmmaker Anil V Nagendran on Saturday said he was severing ties with the party, alleging that certain people within the organisation had subjected him to prolonged hostility for the past several years.
In a Facebook post, Nagendran said he was leaving the party he had believed in with great pain.
He said he had spent more than three decades producing and directing films, books, audio-video programmes and revolutionary songs based on Communist ideas and the history of the movement, without any profit motive.
He said he had spent crores of rupees and a significant part of his life on such works, suffering heavy financial losses and accumulating debts.
Nagendran said his film, based on the struggles led by Communist leaders, including P Krishnapillai, EMS Namboodiripad and A K Gopalan, suffered major financial losses after it was withdrawn following Election Commission action on a complaint that it was released as part of the CPI(M)’s election campaign ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
He said the financial loss was less painful than the alleged hostility of some people who tried to prevent the film from reaching the public despite recognising its political relevance.
Though the film was later screened widely at party programmes, he alleged that the hostility towards him continued.
He said the same treatment was repeated after he made the Tamil film “Veeravanakkam” on the Communist movement, despite positive responses to the film.
Nagendran said the basic lesson of Communism he had understood was compassion towards the oppressed and helpless.
“Unfortunately, I cannot see that today,” he said, while acknowledging that several good leaders and workers remained in the party. PTI TBA TBA KH
