Washim, Sep 24 (PTI) Farmers in Maharashtra’s Washim district raised slogans on Thursday, asking the government to declare the area drought-hit during Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s visit.
The chief minister is visiting Washim and Amravati districts on Thursday in the state’s Vidarbha region to inspect crops affected by scanty rainfall.
He is scheduled to inspect soybean, pigeon pea and cotton crops and meet affected farmers.
During his visit to Mhasla in Karanja Taluka of Washim, a group of farmers raised slogans urging the government to declare Washim district drought-hit.
The farmers also met CM Fadnavis and handed over a memorandum of their demands, including compensation of Rs 50,000 per hectare.
On Wednesday, Fadnavis visited Latur and Dharashiv districts in central Maharashtra and described the drought-like situation there as “extremely serious”, saying the two districts received only around 50 per cent of normal rainfall this year.
