Lucknow, Oct 26 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Congress on Monday hailed Rahul Gandhi’s acquittal in a 2018 defamation case over his remarks against then BJP president Amit Shah as a “victory of truth”, with the state unit chief saying the party’s faith in the judiciary and the Constitution remains unshaken.

Earlier in the day, a special MP-MLA court in Sultanpur acquitted Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Raebareli MP, in the case. He appeared before the court for the verdict.

In a post on X, UP Congress president Aradhana Mona Misra said, “Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, respected Shri Rahul Gandhi ji, acquitted in the defamation case. Truth has won!”

Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, she said the Congress has always had unwavering faith in the country’s judiciary and the Constitution.

“We were confident that the truth could not be suppressed for long. Truth never loses; ultimately, it triumphs, and today, once again, truth has won,” she said.

Former Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai, who is in Varanasi, described it as a major victory for justice and truth.

“Truth can be troubled, but it cannot be defeated,” Rai said on X, with the slogan “Satyamev Jayate”.

Rai said the BJP’s “false defamation case” and conspiracies could never suppress the Congress’s struggle for public welfare and truth.

Congress national spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the acquittal demonstrated that truth will ultimately prevail.

“The acquittal of Rahul Gandhi, a warrior for justice, in a false case proves that truth and justice will win every time in this country. This is a victory for the Constitution of this country,” she said.

Rajya Sabha MP and Deputy Leader of the House Pramod Tiwari called it a victory of truth.

He said Gandhi carried the legacy of former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, adding that he never abandoned the path of justice, regardless of the difficulties.

“The struggle will continue with truth, courage and the values of the Constitution,” Tiwari said.

The Uttar Pradesh Congress, in a separate post on X, said, “Truth can be troubled, but it cannot be defeated.”

“The voice of truth has neither bowed down nor will it ever bow down,” the state unit said. PTI KIS VN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
