Ex-SCBA president urges Rahul Gandhi to call off October 12 march to SC

New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) Senior advocate and former Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Adish C Aggarwala urged Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday to call off a proposed march to the Supreme Court on October 12, saying it would put undue political pressure on the judiciary, according to a press release.

Opposition leaders plan to march to the apex court to submit a memorandum to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

According to the release, in a letter to Gandhi, Aggarwala said such a march would “interfere with the independent judicial process”, especially as it concerns politically-contentious issues linked to pending court proceedings.

It quoted the senior advocate as saying that the CJI, in his administrative capacity, has no power to direct the CEC to resign or remove him from office.

Any grievance about the legality of the Election Commission’s actions must be taken up through judicial proceedings before an appropriate bench and not through a political memorandum to the CJI, the release said, quoting Aggarwala.

The senior lawyer also asked the opposition to keep the CJI’s office above political controversies. PTI MNR RC

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
