New Delhi, May 13 (PTI) The environment ministry on Wednesday reconstituted the Central Empowered Committee (CEC), elevating one of its members — former director general of forests (DGF) Chandra Prakash Goyal — as its chairman.

Two new members have also been appointed to the CEC, Anjan Kumar Mohanty, former additional DGF, and Dr SC Garkoti, a former scientist with the environment ministry.

“The central government hereby makes the… appointments to the Central Empowered Committee with immediate effect for a period of three years or till they attain the age of sixty-six years or till any other order of the central government, whichever is earlier,” said a notification by the ministry published on Wednesday.

Current member Sunil Limaye, former principal chief conservator of forests and chief wildlife warden of Maharashtra, will continue in his position.

The notification did not mention any update on the position of member secretary, which is currently vacant.

The CEC, a statutory body since 2023, was originally formed in 2002 on the Supreme Court’s order. Its primary role is to advise the apex court on writ petitions related to environment and forest matters, and assist in monitoring and compliance with its orders.

The panel was constituted in the famous T N Godavarman vs Union of States case on forest conservation in 2002. The Centre made it a permanent body through a notification dated September 5, 2023.

The CEC comprises a chairperson, a member secretary, three expert members, one each from the fields of environment, forest, or wildlife. PTI ALC RHL
