Beed, Jul 30 (PTI) An elderly ‘warkari’ (Lord Vitthal devotee) was killed and 11 others were injured in a road accident involving three vehicles, including a tractor trolley carrying pilgrims, in Beed district of central Maharashtra, police said on Thursday.
The tractor ferrying devotees returning from the ‘Ashadhi Wari’ (annual walking pilgrimage) in the temple town of Pandharpur in Solapur district was involved in a collision with a Cruiser utility vehicle also carrying warkaris and a car at Salegaon village in Kaij tehsil on Wednesday night, according to police.
The accident occurred at around 8.30 pm when the tractor belonging to a ‘dindi’ (pilgrim group) from the Sant Raghoji Maharaj Sansthan at Borala in Washim district was returning from Pandharpur in western Maharashtra, they said.
According to police, the tractor was hit head-on by an oncoming Cruiser jeep. Moments later, a car travelling on the same road rammed into the accident-hit vehicles, resulting in a severe three-vehicle pile-up.
The impact was so intense that the front portion of the tractor broke into two separate parts.
A 75-year-old warkari travelling in the tractor trolley sustained critical injuries and died while being shifted to the Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Government Medical College and Hospital in Ambajogai town for treatment.
The deceased was identified as Ramdas Mohalle, a resident of Mangrul village in Washim district. Eleven warkaris were also injured in the accident — seven travelling in the tractor and four in the Cruiser jeep — police said.
Eight of the injured were given primary treatment at the Sub-District Hospital in Kaij town before being referred to the Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Government Medical College and Hospital in Ambajogai for further care.
