Phagwara, Aug 10 (PTI) An elderly man was found dead at his farmhouse in nearby Mauli village in Punjab’s Phagwara on Monday, police said.
According to the villagers, the man is suspected to have been murdered late last night while he was asleep.
The incident came to the fore when the victim’s wife when she went to the farmhouse for milking buffaloes Monday morning.
Phagwara Sub-divisional Superintendent of Police, Madhvi Sharma, who reached the spot, identified the victim as Gurcharan Singh (62).
She told reporters that the victim had injury marks on his neck and these appeared to have caused his death.
A murder case is being registered as the statement of Gurcharan Singh’s wife is being recorded, she said.
A senior farmer leader Gurpal Singh Kala Mauli and Mauli village sarpanch Amandeep Kumar said that Gurcharan Singh was a former Kabbaddi player who had retired from the sport long ago.
Various police teams have been constituted to thoroughly investigate different angles of the case that would be resolved soon and brought to its logical end, Sharma said.
She further said that the motive behind the incident was not yet known as all the belongings in his room were intact.
