New Delhi: At IIT-Madras, Day One of placement season 2020 has brought more offers than in the preceding years. At IIT-Roorkee, the fattest domestic salary package on offer is Rs 20 lakh higher than in 2019-20.

Placement season 2020 began at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Tuesday and many branches have reported positive early trends despite the pandemic and slow economy

The IIT placement season is being held virtually this year on account of the pandemic. The first phase of placements is expected to continue till 8 December.

According to information furnished by different IIT branches, the offers received have defied the gloomy expectations set by the pandemic, which has wrought havoc on economy around the world and led to a wave of job cuts.

Major recruiters like Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs, Optiver, Intel, Oracle, Qualcomm and Uber, among others, have joined the exercise, with hundreds of jobs on offer.

IIT-Delhi

At IIT-Delhi, students received over 300 offers on the first day of the placement season, a statement from the institute said Wednesday.

In terms of the number of students recruited, the top recruiters on the campus on 1 December included Microsoft, Intel and Goldman Sachs, the institute added.

“IIT Delhi students bagged over 300 placement offers, including pre-placement offers (PPOs), by the end of the first day of the first phase of the placement season,” the IIT said.

“A few international recruiters have also registered like past years. Further, given the current situation with travel restrictions in many countries, many companies are primarily recruiting for domestic profiles as of now. These may convert to international offers if the situation changes,” the institute added in a statement.

IIT-Madras

IIT-Madras said they witnessed a record number of offers on Day One of the placement season.

“A total of 123 offers were made by 22 companies during Day One’s Session 1.1 (first session). This is higher than any of the preceding academic years. During the last academic year of 2019-20, 102 offers were made by 20 companies at the end of Session 1.1,” a press statement released by the institute Tuesday read.

The big recruiters for the first session included Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Bajaj Auto, ISRO, and Qualcomm. GE and Wipro will participate in the recruitment drive in the coming days, the institute said.

“The total number of companies registered for Phase I of placements is 256. They will be recruiting for a total of 472 profiles. As many as 71 start-ups have registered for recruitment in the ongoing academic year 2020-21,” the statement added.

IIT-Guwahati

The recruiters scouting for employees at IIT-Guwahati include Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Adobe, Oracle, Walmart, Bajaj, American Express, Uber, Accenture Japan, and MTX.

On the first day of placement season, 69 job offers were made to students at the institute, a statement from IIT-Guwahati said Tuesday.

Another 133 students from the institute had already got PPOs before the commencement of the drive, the institute added.

“Despite the ongoing pandemic, the number of PPOs offered this year is equivalent to that of the last year which shows that the overall placement scenario has not been affected so far in 2020 and the institute hopes that the overall placement statistics improve compared to last year,” the institute said.

The statement quoted IIT-Guwahati director Prof. T.G. Sitharam as saying that the institute is “thankful to all the recruiters”. The year 2020 has seen the placement process happening online and the number of recruiters joining the virtual placement has been very encouraging despite the pandemic and we are thankful to all the recruiters,” he said.
