New Delhi: With educational institutions indefinitely shut due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is now seeking parents’ opinions on when to reopen schools this year.

In a letter to education secretaries of all states Friday, the ministry directed them to get the feedback of parents on when they would want the schools to reopen and what changes they expect to be introduced in schools.

The letter, a copy of which has been accessed by ThePrint, asked secretaries to ascertain if parents will be comfortable with reopening schools in August, September or October.

“What is the likely period when they will be comfortable with reopening of schools — August/September/October, 2020 and what are the parents expectations from schools as and when they re-open,” read the letter.

The ministry asked the states to file their responses by 20 July.

The decision to reopen educational institutions will eventually be undertaken only after due permissions from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), but the MHRD is taking this feedback so the process can be initiated.

The ministry is also in the process of finalising guidelines for schools to follow once they reopen. These include staggered attendance in schools and calling only senior students.

Parents have been against reopening schools

Parents of schoolgoing children have been for some time opposing reopening of schools during the pandemic, with many starting online petitions against the move.

In June, a group called Parents Association started a petition saying reopening of schools during the time of pandemic will be like “playing with fire”.

A survey conducted in June by LocalCircles —a polling platform on issues of governance, public and consumer interest — revealed that 70 per cent parents want schools to reopen only 21 days after there are zero cases of Covid-19 in the country.

The study noted that many parents were unsure that norms of social distancing will be followed in schools once they reopen.

Schools across the country have been shut since March in the wake of the pandemic.

Most schools are imparting lessons through online classes.

  1. Schools for 10th and 12th classes should be opened now. Students are facing problem in online classes. Please open schools in Haryana.

  2. The thought of reopening schools should come up only when the country has proper control on coronavirus that means there should be more care and improvement in health services.

We can’t compare other countries with ours since they have the facilities and services for handling covid 19.

  3. OKAY , WE INFECTED MEANS OK BUT IN OUR HOME WE HAVE OLD AGE PEOPLE SO PLEASE DON’T OPEAN
    SCHOOLS AFTER GETTING VACCINE …

  4. Reopening school in these conditions will only create drama…and may also happen that Students get infected from corona…
Who will take the responsibility if anything happens to children…
Different ministers will come over different news channel and say “hume dukh hai iss incident se”and then what…. nothing…
I am also requesting parents to take step forward…and prohibit reopening of school until and unless covid case become 0 ….
    Thank you….

  5. Our nation is undergoing a great challenge because of this covid pandemic .Opening schools at this time poses a great threat to the health of students . The collective opinion of parents is that until the last patient of corona is cured the schools and colleges must not be reopened. But it doesn’t mean the students should have a break in learning. Lakhs and lakhs of students are being taught through the online classes which are arranged by their schools and coaching institutions as per the rules . Let’s hope that the situation becomes normal by the discovery of any vaccines .

  7. School should open in the month of August at least for 12th class students coz students of 12th class will going to face problems regarding their studies they can face depression at this time
    School should reopen Zonewise

  8. As per the current situation, it is very uncertain to decide on such a sensitive issue. As a parent and teacher, I would not want my children to go to school until zero cases across the country are assured and a proper observation period has been conceptualised.
No one has a right to decide the destiny of anyone’s child, family or life. It’s just fine to keep them home and follow the education online with MHRD GUIDELINES DATED 14.07.2020.

      • Life is important than education and I believe it’s just like playing with fire . We can’t put our kids life in danger . I believe we should wait till the vaccine launch.

  11. The school and college should reopen after 15 August 2020 with precautions and new guidelines because there is totally difference between online education and physical attendance….we all are facing too much difficulties while studying online class..there is no any practical program under faculty….at least 1st,2nd,3rd year aspirants colleges as well as institutes will have to reopen after 15 August otherwise pura saal barbad hoga

  12. Opening school is like playing with fire …
School shouldn’t reopen till vaccine reaches Indian market …
And also if many experts are thinking that reopening school will help in hard immunity then just remember
Students also live in families where old ones and young ones also live and also think of the no of beds you have in hospitals… Is it sufficient!!!

    • And you think their parents are immune to corona? If there parents go to work daily(90% of indian families) the probability of being infected is still the same.
