Mumbai, Jul 15 (PTI) The Election Commission on Wednesday reviewed the progress of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls for the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra, which was affected by heavy rainfall, and directed officials to complete the exercise within the stipulated timeframe.

Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Bharti chaired a review meeting in Mumbai, according to a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) release. The meeting was attended by senior officials of the Election Commission, the Maharashtra election machinery and the BMC.

Bharti said the exercise had been affected by heavy rainfall in the region over the past few days, but only two weeks remained to complete door-to-door verification and digitisation.

He directed officials to deploy additional manpower wherever required to assist Booth Level Officers (BLOs), provide adequate training and ensure the exercise is completed on schedule.

Bharti later visited the Electoral Registration Officer’s (ERO) office for the Byculla assembly constituency in south Mumbai and interacted with BLOs to review the progress of household visits and digitisation.

Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra S Chockalingam lauded the BMC for ensuring “100 per cent” deployment of BLOs and said teachers, who are playing a key role in the process, should be encouraged to balance election-related duties with academic responsibilities.

District Election Officer and BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide said innovative practices adopted by some Electoral Registration Officers should be replicated across other constituencies to improve the efficiency of the revision exercise. PTI KK NSK
