Lucknow, Oct 11 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday accused the Election Commission of working in favour of the BJP and alleged that voters were being prevented from exercising their franchise.

Speaking to reporters after garlanding the statue of Jayaprakash Narayan, the pioneer of the ‘sampoorna kranti’ (total revolution) movement, at the Jayaprakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) here, Yadav said, “Who doesn’t know that the Election Commission is dishonest? Who doesn’t know that the Election Commission lies? Who doesn’t know that the Election Commission is working for the BJP?”

Referring to a by-election, he alleged that police personnel had removed their uniforms and worn plain clothes to cast votes.

Yadav also referred to an image purportedly showing an officer pointing a revolver at women and stopping them from voting.

“The Election Commission’s job is to ensure people come to vote and that maximum voter registrations take place. For the first time, we are seeing a situation where ordinary people are unable to get registered as voters and are unable to cast their votes,” he said.

Equating the BJP with Adolf Hitler, Yadav alleged that the party had adopted tactics used by the Nazi leader to target political opponents.

“Hitler used to dress up his own political workers to take revenge on workers from other political parties. They (the BJP) have learned this from Hitler. The workers of other political parties were humiliated,” he said. PTI NAV MDO

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
