New Delhi, July 20 (PTI) A day after warning applicants against submitting AI-generated or digitally manipulated documents during the admission process, Delhi University officials on Monday said it is planning to develop an artificial intelligence-based verification tool for the next admission cycle to detect forged certificates more efficiently.
Speaking to PTI, Dean of Admissions Haneet Gandhi said multiple instances of manipulated documents have been reported by colleges during the ongoing undergraduate admissions process.
“Multiple such cases have been brought to the admission department’s notice from various colleges. We have found digital certificates that are supposed to have QR codes, but when those codes are scanned, they turn out to be completely false or AI-generated documents,” Gandhi said, adding that in some cases, scanning the QR code even shows someone else’s name instead of the candidate’s.
“The digital footprints are simply not matching in these cases,” Gandhi said.
She said such cases have been detected across different categories of applications.
“This has come up in every category; from ECA trials to category certificates and other applications across colleges. However, the university teams and the colleges are doing commendable work in identifying these cases. It is not a simple task to verify every single certificate for more than 90,000 students,” Gandhi said.
The dean said the university is now exploring the development of an AI-enabled verification mechanism or tool to streamline document scrutiny in future admission cycles.
“We will certainly look at developing an AI tool for next year’s admissions so that such cases can be filtered out completely,” she said.
While the university is yet to ascertain the total number of applications involving suspected manipulated documents, Gandhi said such instances had been reported from multiple colleges.
On Sunday, the university had issued a public notice warning candidates against uploading AI-generated, digitally altered or heavily edited documents while applying for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The notice said the admission branch had observed that several applicants were submitting manipulated certificates, mark sheets and identity proofs, which undermine the integrity of the admission process.
It directed candidates to upload only scanned copies of original documents without any digital modification and warned that the university would use verification tools to detect manipulated media.
The university cautioned that candidates found submitting fraudulent or AI-altered documents at any stage of the admission process would face immediate cancellation of their candidature or admission without prior notice.
It also reserved the right to initiate legal action in such cases and said no admission fee would be refunded.
Candidates have also been advised to review the documents they have uploaded and ensure full compliance with the university’s guidelines. PTI AHD RT
