New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) The University of Delhi’s Executive Council has approved a Rs 5,889 crore proposal to expand residential facilities for 21,895 students through the construction of new hostels and reconstruction of two existing ones.

The proposal was approved at the 1284th meeting of the Executive Council, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh.

Under the plan, new hostels will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 4,027 crore, providing accommodation for 15,758 students, while the reconstruction of Jubilee Hall and the PG Men’s Hostel will cost Rs 1,862 crore and accommodate 6,137 students.

Singh said the designs for the buildings had been prepared keeping the needs of the 21st century in mind, with planning undertaken from a long-term perspective.

He said the circumstances under which the university’s existing hostels were built were different from those expected in the future, and the new infrastructure was being planned with the next 100 years in view.

Additional multi-storey hostel buildings are planned at the university’s Dhaka Complex, Surajmal Vihar campus and Najafgarh campus.

Hostels for male and female students will also be constructed at Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura, Najafgarh; at the university’s West Campus in Dwarka; and East Campus in Surajmal Vihar, Karkardooma.

The proposed hostel complexes will include dining halls, shops, common rooms, reading rooms and residences for wardens.

Given the scarcity of vacant land on the university’s campuses, the Executive Council decided that hostel blocks would be designed to make maximum use of the permissible floor area ratio (FAR).

Singh also clarified that the names of Jubilee Hall and the PG Men’s Hostel would remain unchanged after their reconstruction.

The Executive Council urged colleges to prepare proposals for constructing hostels on their respective campuses and submit them to the funding agency. PTI AHD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
