Aligarh: In a heart-wrenching incident in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh, a woman allegedly killed her three-week-old newborn daughter by feeding her a tooth powder laced with sedatives. The incident took place last week in Bhojpur Garhia village.

According to the police, the woman was suffering from mental stress due to family tensions, and the fact that she already had two daughters.

Speaking to ThePrint, circle officer Sarvam Singh identified the couple involved as Yavnesh Kumar, a resident of Bhojpur Garhia, and Nagina, a resident of Dadon area. They had got married on 12 April, 2019, and Nagina subsequently gave birth to two daughters. Her third daughter was born on 8 July.

“Last Wednesday, Yavnesh’s family had stepped out of the house. When they returned in the afternoon, Yavnesh’s brother’s wife noticed that Nagina’s newborn was lying cold and blue. The baby was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors declared her dead. She was later buried on the assumption that it was a natural death,” said Singh.

Two days later, when Yavnesh asked Nagina about the infant’s death, she confessed that she had given the baby sedatives mixed in tooth powder, he added.

“The woman confessed that she killed her daughter by giving her intoxicants. A case of murder has been registered and she has been sent to jail,” he said.

The investigation is under way and the administration is contemplating conduct of psychiatric examination of the woman, the police said.
