New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) The BJP on Tuesday accused the Congress-led Kerala government of double standards, alleging that it has filed cases against nearly 5,000 youth who participated in protests against the alleged NEET paper leak.
The attack came after Leader of Opposition in Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday wrote to Chief Minister V D Satheesan urging the state government to unconditionally withdraw all cases registered against those who participated in solidarity protests in Kerala over the alleged NEET paper leak.
In his letter, Vijayan said students, youth, cultural activists and members of the public in Kerala had staged peaceful demonstrations in support of the nationwide agitation against the Centre over the alleged paper leak.
He claimed that nearly 5,000 people had been booked by Kerala police in connection with the protests across the state.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the Congress practises “double standards”, having a different set of principles for itself and for others.
“The Congress has double standards, just like an elephant’s teeth — one set for show and another for eating,” Poonawalla said in a video statement.
Poonawalla said several states, including Maharashtra, Bihar and Assam, have withdrawn cases against peaceful protesters but the Congress government in Kerala has booked nearly 5,000 people.
He pointed out that while the Congress has been criticising the Centre over the NEET issue and demanded the then education minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, it has failed to take similar action against its own education ministers in states such as Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, where paper leaks have taken place under its watch.
“Look at their hypocrisy. They are the same people who demanded Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, but now they are not demanding the resignation of the education ministers of Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, where the paper leaks have taken place under the Congress’s watch,” he said.
“The Centre has said no false cases will be filed against students. Yes, cases will be filed against arsonists. They will be prosecuted according to the law because the Supreme Court has directed that,” he said. PTI ADI ADI KSS KSS
