New Delhi, Sep 18 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah whether women’s safety was the responsibility of Delhi Police or if it existed just to intimidate and threaten ordinary citizens.
In an X post, Gandhi demanded strict action against those behind the rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Delhi, adding that the national capital has unfortunately become a terrifying daily story for women.
In Delhi, a 17-year-old girl was gang-raped, murdered, and her body was dumped in an open field, Gandhi wrote in the post.
“Such a horrific act of brutality in the capital, and the police had no clue for days. It’s unfortunate that Delhi is no longer the capital today; it has become a terrifying daily story for women,” he said.
Gandhi said criminals are roaming fearlessly.
“Amit Shah ji, Delhi Police is under your control. Ultimately, whose responsibility is women’s safety? Or has the job of Delhi Police been reduced to just intimidating and threatening ordinary citizens?” he asked.
The LoP further demanded the arrest of the culprits behind the girl’s death.
“The beasts must be arrested immediately, strict action and punishment must be taken, and accountability for this criminal negligence must be fixed,” Gandhi said in the post, adding, “India cannot move forward without women’s safety.” A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped, stabbed to death and dumped in an open field by four people, including three minors, after she went with them in a tempo, police said on Thursday.
The girl’s body was found near Jaipal Rana’s field on Kushak Road on September 13. The body had decomposed to such an extent that its gender could not be ascertained immediately. Some parts of the body had also been eaten by stray dogs, and one of her hands was found separated from the body, police said.
According to police, the girl and the accused persons were known to each other. They allegedly drank together inside a tempo before the girl was sexually assaulted, stabbed to death, and her body disposed of.
The girl had not been reported missing by her family. Police said her family told them that she would often leave home and return after a few days.
A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. As there was no apparent eyewitness and the identity of the perpetrators was initially unknown, police teams analysed more than 50 CCTV cameras covering the area and adjoining routes.
