Puducherry, Jun 26 (PTI) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the idea of development includes preservation of civilisational and institutional memory.
Dedicating the 190-year-old lighthouse here, after its renovation, to the nation on Thursday, she said that the lighthouse was intertwined with the maritime history of Puducherry.
The finance minister said that the nation was now moving towards ‘Viksit Bharat’ and development included preservation of civilisational and institutional memory.
Stressing the need for developing new infrastructure and preservation of the assets, Sitharaman said that the country’s civilisation is a long memory and hence it was our responsibility to preserve that memory and to ensure that it is passed on to future generations.
Lauding the initiative of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs for renovating the lighthouse, she said that this showed that the government departments were custodians of the culture.
Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan and Chief Minister N Rangasamy were among those who spoke.
