New Delhi, Sept 22 (PTI) The National Zoological Park on Tuesday held its first orientation programme for Eco-Club in-charge teachers from 12 Delhi schools as part of efforts to strengthen school outreach and involve students in wildlife and biodiversity conservation.
The orientation, organised on World Rhino Day, focused on familiarising teachers with the zoo’s environmental education initiatives, nature-based learning activities, citizen science programmes and other outreach efforts.
The zoo said in a statement that the programme was also aimed at encouraging greater participation of schools in workshops, awareness campaigns and competitions organised on Eco Days and other occasions.
Zoo Director Sanjeet Kuma interacted with the participating teachers and stressed the importance of collaboration between the zoo and schools in promoting environmental education and conservation awareness, the statement said.
Later in the day, the zoo organised a public awareness talk and doodle activity for visitors at the exit gate, where staff shared information on rhinoceroses, their ecological significance, conservation status and challenges faced by the rhino population in the wild, it said.
A special keepers’ talk was also held at the rhino enclosures, where visitors were given insights into rhino behaviour, feeding habits, daily care and scientific management at the zoo, the statement said.
