New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The National Zoological Park on Wednesday observed Global Tiger Day with a series of awareness programmes, educational activities and an online webinar aimed at promoting tiger conservation and sensitising visitors to the ecological importance of the species.
The day-long programme began with a doodle activity and an awareness talk at the zoo’s exit gate, where around 900 visitors, including children, participated, according to a statement.
The activity encouraged visitors to express their views on tiger conservation through artwork while learning about the need to protect tigers and their habitats.
An interactive quiz competition on tiger biology, behaviour and conservation was also organised for visitors, with around 40 people taking part. The session focused on conservation challenges and India’s efforts to protect the species, it stated.
Zoo keepers later conducted an interactive session at the tiger enclosures, sharing information on the animals’ behaviour, feeding, enrichment and day-to-day care under human management. Around 300 visitors attended the session, it said.
As per the statement, the celebrations concluded with an online webinar on the white tiger Mohan of Rewa and its descendants, delivered by retired scientist Nalin Kumar Dubey of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Policy Research, A.P.S. University, Rewa. The webinar explored the history, origin and conservation legacy of white tigers in India.
Separately, WWF-India, the Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) Centre and the National Zoological Park jointly organised an awareness programme at the zoo’s exit gate, which drew more than 500 visitors, it read.
The programme featured a tiger conservation quiz, a conservation pledge and interactive sessions on biodiversity and environmental stewardship.
The zoo’s Director Sanjeet Kumar said tigers are a flagship species whose conservation plays an important role in maintaining healthy forest ecosystems and biodiversity.
He said the zoo remains committed to wildlife conservation, scientific animal management and conservation education while continuing efforts to raise public awareness about protecting tigers and their natural habitats.
