New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh on Friday said key waterlogging hotspots did not witness inundation during the day’s heavy rainfall, while drainage work was underway in other areas where waterlogging was reported.
Heavy rain lashed the national capital on Friday, inundating low-lying areas, disrupting traffic on major roads and leaving several neighbourhoods waterlogged as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the city.
The minister said waterlogging issues at the city’s major hotspots had been resolved, adding that inundation was reported mainly in some villages and rural areas where drainage projects were still in progress.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), however, questioned the BJP government over the situation. “Where are Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who makes reels, and Minister Parvesh Verma, who is responsible for development works? Showing work in advertisements and reels does not mean work is happening on the ground. Why is Delhi in such a condition? Give an answer,” the party said in a post on X in Hindi.
Singh said, “There are many places in Delhi where new drain work is underway, so there are some problems there. Whatever videos the opposition is uploading are not from today. They are the result of no work done in the previous 10 years.” The downpour also brought traffic to a crawl across several arterial roads.
Heavy congestion was reported on Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, the Kirti Nagar stretch, the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh.
The IMD has issued a red alert for Delhi, forecasting moderate rain at many places and heavy rain at isolated locations, accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning, over the next few hours. PTI SSM SSM APL APL
