New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) The Delhi government aims to complete the city’s first double decker flyover in northeast Delhi by December 2026, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Wednesday.
Heading the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) meeting Gupta also approved the revised project estimate of Rs 291 crore from the earlier Rs 220.10 crore. A double-decker flyover is designed to carry both, vehicles and Metro on the same road.
“This is Delhi’s first integrated double-decker structure, where both the flyover and the Metro corridor are being developed as a single integrated project. The 1.40 km long structure is being built between Yamuna Vihar and Bhajanpura Metro stations,” Gupta said.
The project also includes an elevated corridor, new roads, footpaths, road signage, electrical works, drainage, rainwater harvesting and other essential supporting infrastructure, she added.
“At the fifth EFC meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Gupta , the revised project estimate of Rs 291 crore was approved. The government aims to complete the project by December 2026,” a statement said. “The Delhi Government is continuously working to strengthen the capital’s road network and improve traffic flow, as part of this effort, construction of the joint PWD-DMRC double-decker flyover project at Karawal Nagar, Ghonda and Brijpuri Junction- Mangal Pandey Marg in northeast Delhi is progressing at a fast pace,” it said.
The entire project is being executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). A Memorandum of Understanding between the Public Works Department (PWD) and DMRC was signed on February 24, 2021. The project was originally approved at a cost of Rs 220.10 crore.
“Till date, 88 per cent of the project has been completed, with Rs 220.10 crore already spent. Construction was affected in 2023 because the required approvals for certain works were not available,” Gupta said.
The chief minister said that the project has now entered its final phase, with several key works still to be completed.
“Once the flyover is operational, around 65-70 percent of the traffic will move directly onto the double-decker flyover, leaving the surface road primarily for local traffic and significantly reducing congestion in the area,” she said. The project will also provide a signal-free stretch from Gokulpuri to Signature Bridge via Khajuri Khas.
As per the plan the flyover will have a six-lane elevated corridor, along with a pre-cast viaduct. The flyover will be 1.40 km long, with 140-metre-long ramps on either side. PTI SSM MDO MDO
