New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The Delhi government has approved a beautification project for the Ring Road stretch between Shanti Van and Rajghat intersection, the Public Works Department (PWD) said on Friday.
Under the plan, the PWD will undertake a facelift of roads in the Rajghat area, focusing on improved illumination, installation of decorative street lights and horticulture work.
The initiative aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area, which holds both national and international significance.
Rajghat, the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, is frequently visited by foreign dignitaries during official trips to India. It also attracts a large number of tourists and visitors on a daily basis.
“As part of the plan, the street light poles will be made of decorative mild steel work, with LED white light arrangements inside. These would be smart lights, there will also be repair work on the roads wherever required. Tenders have been floated in this regard,” a PWD official said.
The project has to be completed in two months time at the estimated cost of Rs 96 lakh.
This is the second project initiated by the government for the VIP area, this year.
Earlier this year, the PWD also planned a signal-free corridor between Shanti Van crossing and Rajghat crossing to reduce congestion in the area.
“The department is working on a trial infrastructure project aimed at making Ring Road signal-free through U-turns at the Rajghat and Shanti Van crossings,” official added.
Both the crossings witness heavy traffic throughout the day, often resulting in long queues and frequent slowdowns, especially during peak hours, officials added.
Traffic police officials had flagged delay at these junctions due to signalised intersections and turning movements that interrupt traffic flow.
The proposed infrastructure will focus on implementing a U-turn-based traffic management scheme which involves restricting certain right turns and streamlining vehicle movement through designated turning points.
According to officials, such interventions are aimed at reducing signal dependency, minimising crossing conflicts and improving average travel speed.
The trial would allow the department to assess the effectiveness of the scheme before considering similar interventions at other congested junctions along Ring Road. PTI SSM NB NB
