Delhi food safety teams collect 40 samples, destroy 100 kg of contaminated food ahead of Diwali

Stay updated with ThePrint:

New Delhi, Nov 6 (PTI) The Delhi government’s food safety department has destroyed nearly 100 kilograms of food material found unfit for consumption during inspections of sweet shops, dairies and manufacturing units across the city ahead of Diwali, officials said on Friday.

The department inspected outlets in North-East, East, Shahdara, South and South-East Delhi to check food quality and hygiene standards and collected 40 samples of sweets and dairy products, the Chief Minister’s Office statement said.

During the drive, teams collected 22 samples of khoya, paneer, ghee, kalakand, laddus, gulab jamun and dry fruit gift packs from establishments in North-East, East and Shahdara areas. At a dairy in Mandoli Extension, officials found foul-smelling khoya, rasgullas and milk contaminated with mosquitoes and flies. They destroyed nearly 100 kilograms of food material at the premises, the statement said.

In South and South-East Delhi, authorities inspected 12 sweet shops and manufacturing units. They collected 18 samples of laddus, barfi, kalakand, rasgulla, khoya, chhena, paneer, ghee and skimmed milk powder for testing.

The department also inspected a sweet manufacturing unit in Nihal Vihar after a complaint and collected three samples. The unit was operating without registration from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

After finding shortcomings in sanitation and hygiene standards, officials issued improvement notices to eight establishments. The statement said officials will take action against violators based on laboratory reports and inspection findings.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government would not tolerate food adulteration or negligence in maintaining hygiene standards, particularly during festivals. “Protecting public health and maintaining consumer trust remain among the government’s topmost priorities,” she said.

Gupta directed the food safety department to conduct regular inspections of sweet shops, dairies and food manufacturing units and take action against those violating food safety norms, the statement added. PTI VBH ASD
