New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) A 60-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her son after she refused to give him money for liquor, in south Delhi’s Maidangarhi area, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Amod Pandit, has been arrested, they said.

Family members alleged that Amod hit his mother repeatedly with a spade, after initially assaulting her with his fists and feet.

The deceased’s daughter-in-law Ganita Devi said she was informed about the incident by a relative, after which she rushed to the house.

“My mother-in-law tried to reason with him after he came home drunk on Tuesday night and asked for more money. When she refused, he became violent and started beating her. Then he attacked her with a spade,” she alleged.

Amod’s wife and young son witnessed the assault, and the child even pleaded with his father not to assault his grandmother. “The child was crying profusely. He kept saying ‘Don’t hit grandmother’ but Amod pushed him aside,” Ganita Devi alleged.

She further claimed that the accused locked the main entrance from inside during the assault, preventing family members and neighbours from entering the house to rescue the elderly woman.

A PCR call regarding the murder at UP Colony in Kharak Gaon village was received at Maidangarhi police station.

A police team rushed to the spot and found Chinta Devi critically injured inside her house. Taken to Safdarjung Hospital, she was declared brought dead.

Subsequently, a crime team and forensic experts inspected the scene and collected evidence, and a case was registered under sections for murder.

“During probe, police found that Amod had allegedly assaulted his mother following an argument over money,” a senior police officer said.

According to police, the woman had refused to give him cash to buy liquor, triggering the fatal attack. The accused fled the spot following the crime, and was later arrested.

Family members said Chinta Devi often survived by begging and her son would frequently take away the money she collected to fund his drinking habit. PTI BM ARB ARB
