New Delhi, Oct 26 (PTI) Labelling the AAP an “anarchic, criminal party”, the BJP alleged that “murderers” are finding protection under the Punjab government and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for law and order “failure”.

Addressing a press conference here, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia cited three crimes in the state over the past 24 to 36 hours, including a double murder in Moga, the abduction and subsequent death of a 27-year-old man from Patiala, and an attack in the Daba area in which a man’s hand was severed.

Bhatia said the incidents reflected the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab. “Bhagwant Mann…No, he should be called ‘Bhaag-want Mann who runs away. Because whenever responsibility arises, he runs away,” he said.

“The Bhagwant Mann government protects criminals and murderers, while the people of Punjab are the ones who suffer,” Bhatia alleged.

Alleging that the government had failed to take prompt action, he asked how many arrests had been made and under which sections FIRs had been registered in the three incidents.

“Are these goons, murderers and kidnappers linked to the anarchic criminal party? Is that why you are not taking action against them?” he asked.

Bhatia also questioned AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s silence over the incidents, alleging that he routinely addressed the media but had not responded to the serious crimes reported from Punjab.

“Such incidents are taking place because the anarchic criminal party, the corrupt AAP, is colluding with murderers and criminals. It is providing protection to criminals. That is why their (criminals) morale is rising,” he alleged.

The BJP spokesperson further referred to the alleged murders of social media influencer Madhusudan and sarpanch Navtej Singh, questioning the action taken in those cases as well.

He alleged that the state government had failed to curb the drug trade and claimed that a Punjab minister had threatened a member of a victim’s family who had complained about the alleged drug syndicate.

“We demand that if Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is unable to handle the situation, he should resign in the wake of these serious crimes,” Bhatia said.

He said the BJP was committed to making Punjab “free from fear, free from crime and free from drugs”. PTI KSH SKY

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
