Thiruvananthapuram/New Delhi, Oct 11 (PTI) CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas on Sunday alleged that he was brutally manhandled by the Delhi Police and CRPF personnel while on his way to take part in the protest called by CJP at Jantar Mantar against CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi, a visibly out of breath Brittas claimed that he was manhandled by the police and personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) despite him telling them that he was Member of Parliament (MP).

The CPI(M) MP was forcibly carried away by CRPF personnel to a waiting police bus and pushed into one of its seats while he continuously told them to not touch him and that he was Member of Parliament.

Later, Brittas, sitting on the footpath after being deboarded from the police bus, told reporters that he and another man were forcibly pushed and pinned down into their seats and suffocated.

Struggling to breathe following the ordeal, the CPI(M) leader said that a DCP from the police control room saw what had happened, called the police officers on the bus and told them to let him go as he was an MP.

“The police then pushed me out here from the bus and put me in an auto, but refused to accompany me,” he claimed.

A man, identifying himself as Sajid Hussain, who was also in the bus with the MP, told reporters that the police behaved very poorly toward the CPI(M) leader.

Brittas said that if this was his situation despite being an MP and not having violated any laws, what would be the plight of the common people.

He claimed that he was picked up by the police and CRPF while he was speaking to reporters.

“I came here after hearing that our student activists have been picked up by the police,” Brittas said. PTI HMP ROH

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
