New Delhi, Sep 13 (PTI) The Communist Party of India on Sunday welcomed the BRICS declaration calling for global governance reforms and said the grouping should lead the push for a more representative, democratic and equitable international order.
CPI general secretary D Raja said the call for greater representation of the Global South in the United Nations, including reform of the UN Security Council, as well as reforms in the IMF and World Bank was an important step in that direction.
“The inclusion of India and other developing countries in decision-making structures must be pursued with greater urgency,” Raja said in a statement.
Raja also referred to the progress made in India-China relations on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, saying it strengthened the CPI’s longstanding position that disputes between the two neighbouring countries should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
The CPI also welcomed the BRICS countries’ “unequivocal concern” over continuing violence in West Asia and their call for restraint, dialogue and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
“BRICS support for full UN membership for Palestine and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people should be the call of the entire globe,” Raja said.
He said the international community must also address the concentration of power in the hands of a few countries.
“The urgent need for institutional checks on the unilateral exercise of power by imperialist countries cannot be overstated,” Raja said.
The CPI welcomed the reaffirmation of “zero tolerance towards terrorism” in the BRICS’ New Delhi Declaration and also backed the emphasis on greater use of local currencies in trade and financial transactions among member countries.
Raja, however, said this should form part of a broader effort towards de-dollarisation.
“This cooperation should be taken forward into a more comprehensive agenda of de-dollarisation, aimed not at disrupting global trade but at reducing the vulnerabilities created by excessive dependence on a single currency and providing a meaningful check on US financial hegemony,” he said.
The CPI also said the commitments on climate change, sustainable development, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies should move beyond declarations and result in concrete cooperation.
It said such cooperation should particularly ensure that technological and environmental progress benefits humanity as a whole rather than widening existing inequalities.
Referring to the progress made in India-China relations on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, Raja said, “The progress made in India-China relations on the sidelines of the Summit further strengthens the CPI’s longstanding position that bilateral issues between the two neighbouring countries must be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful negotiations.” The CPI said BRICS should now work with other representative institutions and platforms of the Global South to seek a comprehensive reform of the global order.
“BRICS, together with other representative institutions and platforms of the Global South, must now rise to the larger challenge of demanding a comprehensive reform of the global order,” Raja said.
“Hegemony and unilateralism must be rejected, and international institutions must be made genuinely representative, democratic and accountable,” he said.
Raja said the larger objective should be to prevent geopolitical rivalries and the actions of powerful countries from undermining the aspirations of people across the world.
“The world cannot allow the common aspiration for a peaceful and prosperous future of the people to become a victim of the shortsightedness, narrow interests or aggression of a few powerful countries,” he said.
“The Global South must speak with greater unity and determination for a just, multipolar and equitable world order,” Raja said. PTI AO KVK KVK
