Kanpur (UP), Sep 22 (PTI) A 45-year-old cosmetics trader was found dead with his head severed on a roadside in the Bilhaur area of Kanpur on Tuesday, police said, adding that his head was recovered from a nearby pit.
The deceased was identified as Rajkishore Patwa alias Raju, 45, a resident of Devha village who lived with his wife and three daughters in Vaishnav Nagar, Bilhaur.
He dealt in women’s cosmetics and personal-care products, his family said.
According to his wife Madhu, Rajkishore left home around 8 am on his bicycle, saying he was going to Devha village.
About an hour later, a passerby spotted his body near Khurd Khojanpur on Makanpur Road and alerted police.
His bicycle and a gamcha were found near the body. After a search lasting nearly an hour, police recovered the severed head from water accumulated in a nearby pit, said the official.
“There were no other apparent injury marks on the body or face. We suspect that the head may have been severed with a sharp-edged weapon, but the motive has not yet been established. The investigation had not yet reached a conclusion on whether Rajkishore was killed or died in an accident,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi told PTI.
“The body was found by the roadside and the head was recovered some distance away. However, no evidence has so far emerged that conclusively points towards murder,” the DCP said, and added that the body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem.
Police have formed several teams to examine all possible angles, including murder and accident, and identify the sequence of events.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vipin Tada inspected the crime scene and reviewed the evidence collected by the field unit.
Rajkishore’s wife and daughters — Shubhi, Anshi and Nancy — reached the spot after learning about his death. His eldest daughter Shubhi said the family had no known enmity with anyone. PTI COR NAV SHS
