Cop booked for deleting police station CCTV footage to cover up accused’s escape

Stay updated with ThePrint:

Thane, Nov 6 (PTI) A policeman and a technician allegedly deleted CCTV footage from inside a police station in Maharashtra’s Thane district to erase evidence of helping an accused escape from custody, an official said on Friday.

The Bhiwandi police have registered a case against police naik Umesh Chandrabhan Nagare and a technician under sections 241 (destruction, hiding, or alteration of documents or electronic records) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Information Technology Act, the official said.

According to the police, Nagare, who was posted at the Bhoiwada police station, allegedly misused his position and took a bribe from one Akhtar Ali Abbasali Momin to help him escape from the lock-up.

The accused took the help of an unidentified CCTV technician to tamper with the Network Video Recorder inside the senior police inspector’s cabin and delete CCTV footage of the escape, thereby damaging electronic records and destroying evidence, the official said, adding that a probe is underway.
