Chandigarh, Sep 17 (PTI) A six-year-old girl was found dead in a water-filled pit near a construction site in Mohana village in Gohana of Haryana’s Sonipat district, officials said, adding that the police registered a murder case and detained an individual.
The parents of the girl, who are from Madhya Pradesh, work at the construction site in the village, police said.
The girl’s family told reporters at the site on Thursday that her hands had been tied when they found her in the water-filled pit.
The girl was sleeping with her mother on Wednesday in a hutment near the construction site and when she woke up, she found her missing and raised an alarm, they said.
Police said the girl’s body was recovered from the water-filled pit and has been sent for a post-mortem.
We received information that a girl has been found dead. One person, who was found heavily drunk and present near the spot, has been detained for questioning. The girl’s family raised suspicion about him, Mohana ACP Devender Singh told reporters on Thursday.
A murder case has been registered in the matter as per initial investigation, he said.
Whether the person detained could be the accused in the incident, police said this was part of the investigation.
When asked if sexual assault is suspected in the case, ACP said, “At first instance, it does not appear so. However, things will become clear in the postmortem report and based on that report further action will be initiated accordingly.” The detained person is from a village in Karnal and is being questioned, the ACP said.
