Kishanganj, Oct 11 (PTI) A 32-year-old constable allegedly shot himself dead with his service pistol in the police barracks in Bihar’s Kishanganj district on Sunday, officials said.

The incident took place between 8 am and 8.15 am, they said.

The deceased, identified as Sameer Kumar, was found unconscious after police personnel rushed to the barracks on hearing a gunshot. He was taken to Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead, police said.

“Prima facie, the case appears to be one of suicide. A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team has reached the spot for an investigation, and all aspects are being thoroughly examined,” SP Santosh Kumar said.

The constable, a native of Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district, had been posted with the Dial 112 emergency response service in Kishanganj for the past six months and was staying in the police barracks, officials said.

The exact circumstances surrounding his death and the reason behind it will be established after the investigation, they added. PTI CORR SUK SOM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
