Gangtok, Oct 26 (PTI) The opposition Congress will train ‘Vote Rakshaks’ across Sikkim’s six districts to help voters verify their names in electoral rolls and address registration-related issues, a party leader said on Monday.

Addressing a press conference in Gangtok, Congress observer for the state Saif Ali Naqvi said the initiative undertaken as part of the ‘Vote Bachao Desh Bachao Abhiyan’ will continue until November 26, with meetings planned at the village level across the state.

Naqvi also questioned the appointment of Sikkim Governor Dushyant Gautam, alleging that it could shield him from scrutiny in connection with the murder of Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand.

He urged President Droupadi Murmu and the Supreme Court to take cognisance of the matter and called for an investigation into the allegations, which remain unverified.

Naqvi accused the BJP-led central government of undermining the independence of the Election Commission and questioned the appointment process of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

He also demanded greater transparency in electoral roll revisions. PTI COR SOM

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
