Shimla, Aug 1 (PTI) Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly Jai Ram Thakur on Saturday said the Congress government in the state has replaced governance with political vendetta, abuse of power and administrative intimidation.
Addressing mediapersons here, he said that Dev Bhoomi Himachal Pradesh, known for its peaceful traditions and democratic values, is now witnessing an unprecedented misuse of state machinery to target political opponents.
“Leaders who left the Congress and joined the BJP are being targeted as part of a politically motivated campaign, along with their family members and associates,” he said, citing examples of FIRs registered against state BJP chief Rajeev Bindal, MLAs Sudhir Sharma and Ashish Sharma, former minister Sukhram Chaudhary and former MLA Hoshiar Singh.
Thakur, a former chief minister of the state, said that instead of focusing on development, employment and public welfare, the Congress government is focused on shutting down public institutions, halting development works and intimidating those who question its functioning.
He alleged that BJP zila parishad members, panchayat pradhans, municipal councillors and other elected representatives who won the recent local body elections are being served notices and subjected to unnecessary inquiries merely because they defeated Congress candidates.
Launching a sharp attack on the Congress government, Thakur said incidents related to law and order, violent crimes and crimes against women demand urgent attention, but the state machinery is allegedly being used to prepare cases against political opponents.
Claiming that there is widespread dissatisfaction within the Congress over the functioning of the current government, he suggested that Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu should focus on governance and addressing people’s issues.
The BJP is compiling a “comprehensive charge sheet” documenting alleged corruption, financial mismanagement, abuse of administrative machinery, anti-people decisions and misuse of power by the Congress government, Thakur said.
The document, supported by evidence, will be placed before the people of Himachal Pradesh through a statewide public campaign, he said, urging government officials to discharge their duties impartially and not succumb to political pressure, reminding them that the administration is accountable to the Constitution and the rule of law, not to any political party.
“Democracy cannot be sustained by intimidating the opposition, registering politically motivated cases or misusing state institutions,” the leader of opposition said, asserting that the BJP would continue to raise these issues through democratic means.
He expressed confidence that the people of Himachal Pradesh would give a decisive verdict against the Congress government in the 2027 assembly elections. PTI BPL RUK RUK
