Kolkata, May 4 (PTI) Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury trailed against BJP’s Subrata Maitra by 5,266 votes in the crucial Baharampur Assembly seat in Murshidabad district after five rounds of counting were completed, Election Commission data said.
While Maitra, the sitting MLA from the seat, bagged 31,365 votes, Chowdhury has managed 26,099 votes so far. Trinamool’s Naru Gopal Mukherjee, who finished second in the 2021 edition of state polls, was currently placed at the third position with 13,295 votes.
In all, 15 rounds of counting will take place in the Baharampur seat before the results are declared.
Chowdhury’s political standing was tested in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he suffered a setback, losing his long-held seat to TMC candidate Yusuf Pathan by a significant margin, prompting his resignation as state Congress chief.
Despite this, he has sought to reassert his relevance, eyeing a comeback in state politics in 2026 after nearly three decades and chose to contest from Baharampur amid a three-cornered fight. PTI SMY SUS RG
