Ahmedabad, Sep 2 (PTI) The Congress in Gujarat on Wednesday demanded that a drought be declared in the districts which have had deficient rainfall this season, while the state government said that availability of drinking water and fodder will be ensured in these areas.
Speaking to the media after a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said that the issue of low rainfall in the districts of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka and Jamnagar was discussed.
All departments were directed to ensure the availability of adequate drinking water and fodder in these areas, he said.
The Chief Minister also instructed in-charge ministers of those districts to closely monitor the situation.
Earlier, state Congress chief Amit Chavda said at a press conference that while farmers were suffering due to the lack of rains, the state government was busy with other matters.
“The government should immediately declare the districts of Saurashtra and North Gujarat where rainfall has been very scant as drought-prone,” he demanded. Farmers’ debts and electricity bills in these areas should be waived, and fodder-distribution centers and Gaushalas be started every seven km, added.
The Congress also demanded that relief works should be started in villages where the rain has been sparse this time. PTI PD KRK
