Varanasi (UP), Feb 28 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh Congress has demanded increased security for its Varanasi zone head Ajai Rai, following the recent killing of a witness in the 2005 BSP MLA murder case.

A delegation met with Police Commissioner, Varanasi, Ashok Jain Mutha on Tuesday and raised the demand, saying Rai’s testimony led to a court sentencing mafia don Mukhtar Ansari.

“We Congress workers want to protect our popular leader Ajay Rai as punishment for Mukhtar Ansari was possible only because of Rai’s testimony,” chief of the party’s city unit Raghavendra Chaubey said.

During the meeting, the Congress delegation also quoted Supreme Court directives on witness protection and demanded complete security for UPCC provincial president Ajay Rai and his family, Chaubey added.

Rai, meanwhile, said while a court has ordered that he be provided four security personnel, the district administration has given him just one gunner.

“I always raise my voice against the government. Every day the government is framing false cases against me and is not making proper arrangements for my security,” he alleged.

Prime witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal, Umesh Pal and his police security guard Sandeep Nishad were shot dead last Friday outside his home in the Dhoomanganj area of Prayagraj. Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed is the prime accused in the BSP MLA murder case and is currently lodged in a Gujarat prison. PTI COR SAB IJT
