New Delhi: A day after Jantar Mantar was denotified as a protest site by the Union home ministry, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders and supporters “sneaked” into the premises with the Indian National Flag in hand. They were detained shortly after, and were last seen being taken in a bus to Jaffarpur Kala Police Station.

On Tuesday morning, CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka, spokesperson Saurav Das, National Organisation In-charge Ajinkya Shinde, along with a few other members of CJP, climbed atop barricades and gates to enter Jantar Mantar.

In a video shared by group co-founder Abhijeet Dipke, the CJP members were seen running towards Jantar Mantar and sloganeering, flag in hand. As they gathered inside Jantar Mantar, they were detained shortly after by the security personnel stationed there.

“Cockroaches with the Tiranga sneaked into Jantar Mantar early this morning before they were picked up by Delhi Police. @AshutoshRanka, @SauravDassss, @AjinkyaCJP along with other team members have been detained. You cannot denotify the resistance, @narendramodi,” Dipke posted on X.

“Fortress Jantar Mantar breached,” wrote Ranka in a post.

The CJP had earlier submitted written intimation of a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar to the Delhi Police and given them 24 hours to respond. Later in the day, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) through a standing order notified that Jantar Mantar was no longer a protest site.

The MHA had constituted a committee to examine alternative proper venues for citizen’s right for organising protests/demonstrations in place of the existing “designated site”. Based on the committee’s recommendations, Jantar Mantar as a protest venue has been de-notified,” the standing order read.

Reacting to the order, Dipke had said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has denotified Jantar Mantar as a protest site, next he will denotify democracy. “Today, Modi denotified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. Tomorrow , he will denotify democracy itself. The dictator’s problem was never the protest site. It was the very idea of people protesting,” his social media post read.

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
