Shillong, Apr 24 (PTI) The Meghalaya Police have busted a vehicle theft network involving minors and recovered two stolen scooters in West Jaintia Hills district close to the Bangladesh border, an officer said on Friday.
Investigations began into possible cross-border smuggling of stolen two-wheelers.
Acting on a complaint, police launched a probe into the theft of a scooty from Ialong Civil Hospital, Jowai town.
CCTV footage helped identify a suspected vehicle, following which an intensive patrolling operation led to the interception of the vehicle and detention of five occupants, including four minors.
“During questioning, one child in conflict with law disclosed that the stolen scooty had been taken to Pdengshakap village,” Additional Superintendent of Police (DSB) Crescency W Lyngdoh said in a statement.
A police team subsequently proceeded to the village, located a few kilometres from the Bangladesh border, and recovered the vehicle after observing due legal formalities, she said.
In a related development, another complaint was received from a resident of Nongmensong, Shillong, regarding the theft of a two-wheeler in the early hours of the same day.
This vehicle was also traced and recovered from Pdengshakap village, she said.
Both vehicles have been brought to the Phramer Traffic Cell for further legal action, police said.
Officials said the involvement of minors and the recovery of the vehicles from a location close to the international border have prompted an investigation into possible cross-border smuggling of stolen two-wheelers.
Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and ensure proper security of their vehicles, and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or dial 112. PTI JOP NN
