The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has appointed Ramesh Babu V as its new member. He has taken oath of office and secrecy and joined the commission on May 21, 2024, a PIB press release stated.
Babu V. held the position of Director (Operations) at the National Transmission Property Control Authority (NTPC) from May 2020 to his retirement. He has held various other positions at NTPC before his retirement. The oath of office and secrecy was administered to Babu V. by the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy R.K. Singh.
The commission is responsible for regulating the inter-state transmission of electricity. It also has the power to issue license for inter-state transmission and trading, adjudicate disputes, and advise the Central Government on the formulation of National Electricity Policy and Tariff Policy.
Under the Electricity Act, 2003, CERC has the power to regulate the tariff of companies generating electricity on or under the control of the Central Government. It also has the power to regulate the tariff of other companies having a composite scheme for generation and sale of electricity in more than one State.
In addition, the commission has the power to regulate the inter-state transmission of electricity and to determine the tariff for inter-state transmission of electricity.
